KIMONO COATS
Yukata & Nemaki
The name yukata derives from the words YU (bath) and KATABIRA (undergarment).
About 1000 years ago, the Japanese court nobility used yukatabira cloths made of linen.
Later warriors started using them as towels after bath. Common people started using
yukatabira cloths for about 300 years ago, when public baths became popular. At that
time the yukata coats were made of cotton, and were used every day after bath.
Originally the yukata coats were coloured blue and white. Today they are used not only
at festival occasions but also as simple pyjamas (nemaki).
